resource: starting a support group // 15 oct 2018

There’s a moment for all of us in the LGBTQIA+ community when we realise that we differ from the heterosexual norm presented to us by society. When we identify that we are different to those around us and we begin to grapple with what that means. For me, it was in early high school, for some it’s earlier than that, and for others it can occur later in life.

This is often a very private realisation and, depending on who we have around us at the time, can be quite an isolating experience. This is moment when we need to find others like us and organisations familiar with our experiences. Without safe, accessible and appropriate services and support, this time can be highly stressful and confronting. Finding the right support and like-minded people to relate to is really important in understanding and accepting your queerness.

Ultimately, it helps to know that you’re not alone, that you have shared experiences and that help is available if you need it. Indeqx was built with this specifically in mind – to connect people with their people – either through finding a group already in existence in our directory or providing you with the tools to start a group of your own.

The groups listed on indeqx are updated regularly in the hope of providing options to people that are available and current. In the event that you don’t find what you’re looking for in your area, we have put together some guidelines to consider if you’re thinking about creating something to address your support needs – you can check these out here.

We believe that the LGBTQIA+ communities in Australia are made stronger through collaboration and the sharing of our experiences, something we hope to enable through indeqx. Our aim is to list what’s available now and to enable you to create what you need if you can’t find it. It’s a big task, but through collaboration, we’re going to give it a go!
