tag spotlight: legal services // 12 oct 2018

Every week we’re going to profile a tag on indeqx, explain where it fits in our directory, and profile the amazing groups doing big things in each of these classifications.

This week, let’s talk about…

legal services

what?

There are many not-for-profit legal services around Australia that provide services for the LGBTIQA+ community. These organisations provide confidential legal advice to people who often experience significant barriers to justice as well as discrimination at a higher rate than general society.

why?

Specialised legal services specifically for the LGBTIQA+ communities exist because there are unique issues apart from the rest of society, including same-sex adoption, changing official gender markers, domestic violence, health rights and discrimination like transphobia and homophobia.

A common thread tying together all of the legal services listed on indeqx is the importance placed on empowering clients to achieve equal access to the justice and social welfare systems. All of these organisations are advocating for law reform and the equal rights of queer people in society.

If you run or know of an organisation that isn’t listed above, please email [email protected] so we can add it to our queer directory.
